A woodworker needs many tools to carry out woodworking projects. If he takes up complex projects that need to be done fast and efficiently, having power tools is a must. However, the first set of tools that any woodworker should have is hand woodworking tools. A wood worker will need to have the right hand tools for flawless execution of projects.
Here is the list of basic wood working tools:
Claw Hammer: The very first tool that is a must-have in a woodworker’s tool kit is a claw hammer. It features a head that has a claw on one side a smooth end for hitting the head of the nail on the other. It typically comes with a straight handle and should be comfortable in your hand. The typical size of the most commonly used claw hammer is 20 oz.
Screwdrivers: Every household has a screw driver, but a woodworker must have a variety of them. Make sure that the ones you choose are of high quality ones as you are going to use them almost every day.
Tape Measure: To be able to carry out woodworking projects, one will need to take accurate measurement of parts of a woodworking project. That is why having a measuring tape is a must. A good quality retractable tape that is 25 feet long is typically good enough.
Layout Square: This particular tool proves quite useful in marking square cuts on stock and is also useful in measuring angles. Buy one that is made of metal and metal ones are durable. A 6” layout square is sufficient.
Level: A level lets you know if a particular piece is flat. Typically, 48” is a good length for most woodworking projects.
Chisels: Chisels are indispensable in woodworking. One should choose the ones made up of high alloy carbon steel and come with a hardwood grip. It is quite helpful cleaning out joints. A serious woodworker should have them in varied sizes.
Nail Set: A nail set looks like a small, round chisel. It is primarily used to sink nail head beneath the surface of the wood.
Block Pane: It is used for a number of tasks, like flattening a piece of wood, shaping or chamfering, etc. You must get hold of a good quality block pane.
Utility Knife: This is a small tool but is quite versatile. It can come quite useful for cleaning the hinges of mortise, scribing woods, etc.
The Hand Saw: A woodworker must have a couple of good quality hand saws in their workshop. There are a variety of them like a coping and tenon saw, a dovetail saw, hand miter saw, etc. They come in a variety of sizes. So, depending on the size of wood you want to cut, you should have them in a couple of sizes.
